Cumbrae Medical Centre
Introduction by Dr Jim Bryson
Cumbrae Medical Practice is now happily settled into its new home at the refurbished Garrison Building.
As one of the team who had to struggle for years in the previous surgery to provide health services for the islanders I am only too conscious of the difficulties all staff and clients had to endure on a daily basis till our eventual move in July 2008. The contrast between our previous Kelburn Street premises and our new ‘palace’ is striking. Just as striking is the transformation of the heart of our town’s seafront by the replacement of the tangle of charred stone, boarded windows and cold railings with an award winning building.

The top floor of the Garrison has been taken over by the NHS, providing what we believe is the most spectacular surgery premises in the country. Not just the beautifully restored architecture but also the stunning views over Millport Bay provide us with a workplace where job satisfaction is not a distant dream but a reality. For our patients too it could now be argued that a visit to the doctor’s waiting room can be a pleasurable experience. |

The top floor of the Garrison is accessed from the side entrance on the East of the building, from College Street. The elevator is suitable for wheel chair users. As well as a GP surgery and dispensary there is a separate Health Service Department comprising Physiotherapy, Podiatry and visiting Consultant room. Thus it is possible for dieticians, health visitors, social workers, cancer care nurses, psychiatrists and perhaps in the future a visiting dentist to be seen by island patients. The Surgery provides a full range of services including a dispensary allowing consultation and supply of prescriptions all under the same roof. |
